High-Speed Bus Cancellation Fees to Be Significantly Increased

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) will overhaul the cancellation fee system for high-speed buses to improve efficiency. The new system, set to take effect on May 1, aims to address the “no-show” problem and prevent fraudulent use.

According to MOLIT on the 18th, currently, high-speed buses charge up to 10% cancellation fees before departure and 30% after departure, regardless of whether it is a weekday or holiday. However, this system has led to “no-show” issues, especially during busy times like Fridays and holidays, due to the same fee structure applying across the board. This problem is particularly severe on long-distance routes or those with high demand (e.g., Seoul-Gwangju, Seoul-Geoje). As a result of these no-shows, people who genuinely need tickets are unable to purchase them. Elderly people, who are not familiar with mobile booking systems and find it difficult to check canceled tickets in real time, are especially affected.

The revised system, which will take effect on May 1, introduces differentiated cancellation fees based on weekdays (Mon-Thu), weekends (Fri-Sun, holidays), and holidays (Lunar New Year, Chuseok). While the fees for weekdays will remain the same, higher fees will be imposed on weekends and holidays. For example, if a ticket is canceled just before departure, a 10% fee will apply on weekdays, 15% on holidays, and 20% during major holidays.

The cancellation fee after departure will also gradually increase. The current 30% will rise to 50% in 2025, 60% in 2026, and 70% in 2027. This measure is intended to prevent some passengers from taking advantage of the system.
