<Korean Info> “800 years old” ginkgo tree festival is held.

An autumn festival celebrating the golden ginkgo trees of Ban Gye-ri, Unmak-eup, is set to take place.

On November 1st, starting at 10:30 a.m., the city of Wonju will host the “Ban Gye-ri Ginkgo Festival” in the Ban Gye-ri area of Unmak-eup. This annual festival, held since 2017, aims to promote the ginkgo trees of Ban Gye-ri as a local tourism asset.


The first part of the festival will kick off with a performance by the Hangaram Pungmul Group, which showcases traditional Korean culture. This will be followed by a celebratory performance from the Wonju City Symphony Orchestra and the Laon Choir, delighting the audience with an array of visual and auditory experiences.


The second part features a vibrant Autumn Foliage Concert, filled with cultural performances, as well as the Ginkgo Singing Contest, where local residents can show off their talents.


A concurrent event will be a photography exhibition themed “The Four Seasons of Ban Gye-ri Ginkgo,” offering visitors the chance to admire the ginkgo tree’s beauty throughout the year. Additional interactive activities include writing wishes on ginkgo leaves, balloon play, and more, creating memorable experiences for festival-goers.

Designated as Natural Monument No. 167 in 1964, the ancient Ban Gye-ri ginkgo tree stands 34.5 meters tall with a trunk circumference of 16.9 meters, boasting an age of over 800 years. Every year, from late October to early November, this 12-story-high ginkgo tree transforms the surrounding landscape into a brilliant golden spectacle, captivating numerous visitors.
