<Korean Info> What should I do if I lose something at a Korean airport?

The Incheon Airport Customs Office has announced the launch of a unified lost and found inquiry system, integrating the "Korea Customs Service Lost and Found Inquiry System" and the National Police Agency's "Lost and Found Integrated Portal System." This new system aims to help travelers quickly locate lost items within the security areas of airports and seaports in South Korea, including bonded areas.

Previously, travelers who lost items at Incheon Airport had to use different systems depending on whether the lost item was subject to tax.

For instance, taxable lost items such as alcohol or cigarettes purchased at duty-free shops had to be checked through the "Korea Customs Service Lost and Found Inquiry System (UNI-PASS)," while non-taxable items like passports and ID cards had to be searched via the National Police Agency's "Lost and Found Integrated Portal (LOST112)."

In simple terms, taxable lost items refer to goods requiring tax payment, such as alcohol, cigarettes, and duty-free products. Non-taxable lost items include passports, identification cards, credit cards, wallets in use, clothing, mobile phones, and other items that do not require tax payment.

For travelers unaware of these two separate systems, losing an item often meant the inconvenience of having to contact multiple agencies such as customs, the police, the Incheon Airport Lost and Found Office, or even the airline.

As of last year, the number of non-taxable lost items amounted to 28,552 cases, a 4.4-fold increase from 6,454 cases the previous year. Taxable lost items also saw a rise, with 4,129 cases last year, up 1.6% from 2,494 in 2022.

Notably, the number of lost items within the airport’s security areas surged from 8,948 cases in 2022 to 32,681 cases in 2023, a 3.6-fold increase.

As a result, Incheon Airport Customs announced that it has integrated the two separate systems into the National Police Agency's LOST112 portal, allowing travelers to inquire about their lost items through customs, the police, or the Lost and Found Office without having to deal with multiple organizations.

A customs official stated, "With the integration of the lost and found inquiry systems, it is expected that the confusion and inconvenience faced by approximately 4,000 travelers each year in finding their lost items will be greatly reduced."
