<Korean Information> Is kimbap a diet food?

Kimbap contains a lot of vegetables, which makes it feel like a health food.Because of this, many people feel comfortable eating it even while dieting, but is kimbap really helpful for dieting?

In conclusion, the effectiveness of kimbap for dieting depends entirely on what you put inside it. The typical kimbap sold at specialty stores wrapped in foil is not helpful for dieting. Not only is the rice flavored with various seasonings like salt and sesame oil, but the ingredients inside are also stir-fried in oil, making it higher in fat content than you might think. Depending on the ingredients used, the average calorie count of kimbap is between 460 and 600 kcal. Adding items like ham or tuna mixed with mayonnaise can significantly increase the calorie count.

If you still want to eat kimbap while dieting, it is best to reduce the amount of rice.

Since rice makes up half of the contents of kimbap, reducing the amount of rice will naturally decrease the calorie count. If you don’t want to reduce the amount of rice, you can use konjac rice instead of regular rice to make konjac rice. Konjac is very filling and helps prevent overeating, which is beneficial for dieting. Additionally, you can make keto kimbap by wrapping the contents in an omelet instead of rice, or make vegetarian kimbap using tofu skin. Another option is to fill the kimbap with plenty of vegetables like cucumber and carrot, without adding ham or other high-calorie ingredients.

However, it is important to be cautious about nutrient deficiencies while dieting.

In particular, you need to ensure that your protein intake does not decrease. Protein is used to build muscle and affects the increase in basal metabolic rate. You can also get protein through kimbap. Spread a thin layer of rice mixed with whole grains like brown rice on the seaweed, and place protein-rich ingredients like chicken breast sausage or tofu on the empty part of the rice. Keep the seasoning to a minimum, and if you want to add some spice and crunch, lightly wash some napa cabbage kimchi and add it, or include crunchy vegetables like chili peppers.
