<Korean News> Election Commission server exchange draws criticism for “attempt to destroy evidence of rigged election”.

Amid ongoing efforts by the National Election Commission (NEC) to replace its servers for security reasons, a heated controversy has erupted over allegations of "evidence destruction."

According to a KBS report on the 13th, the NEC revealed that the cost of relocating its servers would amount to 2 billion won (approximately 215 million yen).

The NEC explained that if the model names of the servers were leaked, it could create security vulnerabilities. However, criticism has been raised that the sudden server replacement may be an attempt to destroy evidence related to election fraud.

The NEC pushed back against President Yoon Suk-yeol's remarks on December 12, in which he pointed out problems with the Election Commission, arguing that such criticism contradicts his acknowledgment of past presidential elections.

However, the fact that the server replacement was initiated immediately after the president's comments has fueled suspicions of a "legalized attempt to destroy evidence."

Similar incidents have occurred in the past.

In 2020, when allegations of election fraud prompted a request for evidence preservation, the NEC proceeded with a server replacement, sparking significant controversy.

At the time, the NEC claimed that the servers were operating on a closed network, ensuring their safety. This same reasoning has been cited for the current server replacement process, further intensifying the suspicions.

Moreover, the NEC has been criticized for lacking sufficient in-house security personnel, relying on external firms to manage its security. Allegations have surfaced that these firms may be linked to specific political factions.

In light of these circumstances, calls are growing for the NEC to provide a transparent explanation and take measures to dispel suspicions regarding its decision to relocate the servers.
