"Hangeul Calligraphy," the Korean traditional art of writing using the unique Hangeul characters, has been designated as a national heritage.

On the 23rd, the Cultural Heritage Administration announced that "Hangeul Calligraphy" has been designated as an intangible cultural heritage.
Hangeul Calligraphy refers to the act of writing Hangeul with ink and brush, as well as the traditional knowledge and techniques embedded in the practice.
Since the creation and distribution of Hunminjeongeum in the 15th century, Hangeul has been used to record the lives of Koreans on various media such as paper, metal, stone, and fabric.
It was widely used from the royal court to the common people, appearing in handwritten versions of Hangeul literature, letters, and more. Various calligraphic styles evolved, including the "Bonseontae" used for printing, the "Gungtae" used by royal court ladies, and the "Mintae" that personalized the writing.

According to the Cultural Heritage Administration, Hangeul calligraphy is highly valued for its unique expression of the Hangeul script, its development of distinct styles and techniques, and its expansion into various artistic fields.
Hangeul calligraphy, which is still actively passed down, has developed into an innovative form of visual art. It has expanded into the fields of calligraphy, media, and performance arts, contributing to cultural diversity.
Since it is widely enjoyed by the public through educational institutions and related organizations, it was designated as a "community item," without recognizing any specific owner or organization.
The Cultural Heritage Administration explained that "Hangeul Calligraphy expresses unique brush techniques and sophisticated beauty, and its expansion into various artistic fields contributes to cultural diversity and creativity."
