<Korean News> How is the hygiene management at mega coffee and other low-priced coffee shops?

The annual per capita coffee consumption in the country has reached 405 cups, more than twice the global average, while violations of the Food Sanitation Act by coffee franchise chains have been on the rise.

According to data from the Food and Drug Safety Administration on "Food Sanitation Act Violations by Coffee Franchises," coffee franchise chains committed 188 violations of the Food Sanitation Act last year, a significant increase from 76 violations in 2020, marking an approximately 2.5-fold increase.


By brand, Mega Coffee had the highest number of violations with 138 cases, followed by Compose Coffee with 135 cases, A Twosome Place with 84 cases, The Venti with 69 cases, and Paik’s Coffee with 62 cases.


An analysis of the types of violations during the same period revealed that out of a total of 634 violations, the most frequent was the failure to attend hygiene education, with 287 cases (45.3%), followed by violations of standards and specifications at 151 cases (23.8%), failure to report business changes at 50 cases (7.9%), violations of sanitary handling standards at 49 cases (7.7%), and failure to undergo health examinations at 36 cases (5.7%).
