The era of high prices has ushered in a renewed spotlight on family buffets, which offer both "value for money" and "gastronomy," marking the start of a second golden age.
According to industry insiders on the 29th, large-scale buffet operators have reported record-breaking performance post-pandemic, with continued strong growth.
E-Land Eats' "Ashley Queens," in particular, is forecasting its highest-ever annual sales this year. The Jamsil Lotte Castle branch surpassed monthly sales of 1 billion KRW (approx. USD 835,000) last year and continues to grow rapidly. Last year, it posted an annual revenue of 8.6 billion KRW (approx. USD 7.2 million), and it is anticipated to exceed 10 billion KRW (approx. USD 8.4 million) this year.
An E-Land Eats spokesperson commented, “Buffets are gaining attention as a cost-effective dining option in this high-price era. Supported by a wide range of customers, sales are surging.”
Ashley Queens offers over 100 menu items at an unbeatable weekday lunch price of 19,900 KRW (approx. USD 16). Their large venues, accommodating 200–400 seats, can serve over 500 customers daily, making them popular for student groups and corporate gatherings alike.
CJ Foodville’s "VIPS" is also thriving, with per-store sales growing an average of 35% annually from 2020 to 2023, and that growth continues this year. Notably, the Mokdong 41 Tower branch is so popular that weekend reservations are fully booked a month in advance. VIPS' weekday lunch price is 37,900 KRW (approx. USD 32).
Other establishments, such as "Cafe" at the Shilla Stay in Gwanghwamun, are also drawing attention with their affordable prices.
Dining out costs continue to rise, with Statistics Korea reporting a 24% year-over-year increase in monthly dining expenses as of September. Additionally, data from the Korea Consumer Agency shows that single portions of samgyeopsal (200g) now cost 20,083 KRW (approx. USD 16.80), and samgyetang is priced at 17,269 KRW (approx. USD 14.50), marking a 35% increase from the previous year.
