Registration Process for Smart Pass Mobile App Simplified at Incheon International Airport.

Incheon International Airport Corporation announced on the 23rd that the registration process for the Smart Pass mobile app, which uses facial recognition for departure services, has been simplified through real-time information sharing with government agencies.
The Smart Pass, introduced in July of last year as the first facial recognition departure service at a domestic airport, allows passengers to pass through the departure gate and boarding gate without needing to take out their passport or boarding pass, provided they have pre-registered their facial information.
To use the Smart Pass service, passengers need to install the dedicated mobile app (ICN SMARTPASS) and go through steps such as taking a photo and verifying the authenticity of their passport before registering a Smart Pass ID.
In terms of passport authenticity verification, passengers previously had to use the mobile app to manually scan the electronic passport’s IC chip. However, with the simplification of the registration process, the verification can now be automatically conducted without the need to manually scan the IC chip, thanks to the information sharing with government agencies.
For passports other than South Korean ones, the traditional IC chip recognition method will still be required for authenticity verification.
Additionally, if pre-registration is done through other apps (KB Star Banking, Toss) rather than the dedicated mobile app, the traditional method will still be applied.
