The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has released photos of Jeju Air's black box, including the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR).
The Ministry announced that the FDR, a critical component in determining the cause of the Muan Airport disaster, has sustained partial damage and will be sent to the United States for analysis.
In a briefing held on the afternoon of the 1st, the Ministry stated, "The damaged FDR was deemed impossible to extract data from domestically. With the cooperation of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), it was agreed to conduct the analysis in the U.S."
Prior to this, the Ministry revealed that the connector of the FDR, which was collected with partial external damage, was found to be missing. They had been conducting technical reviews to determine the feasibility of data extraction.
The connector, a flat, wide component, facilitates power supply and data transfer.
Regarding this, the Ministry explained, "The accident investigation committee conducted technical reviews on whether the missing connector could be replaced or whether another connector could be found and fully connected." However, they added, "It was determined that this would be difficult, and sending it to the U.S. was identified as the fastest and most reliable option."
On the extent of the damage, the Ministry commented, "The FDR does not appear to be significantly damaged externally. However, the extent of the remaining data will only be known after data extraction."
The reason for sending the device to the U.S. was further elaborated: "Experts advised that repairing the connector, even by creating a substitute and attaching it, is not a simple task. Careless handling during the process could risk the preservation of the data."
