As the COVID-19 pandemic subsides and international travel increases, it has become evident that more South Koreans are falling victim to incidents and accidents abroad.
Last year alone, 22 people were murdered, 98 were kidnapped or detained, and 105 were victims of rape or sexual assault.
According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 15,769 South Koreans were involved in incidents or accidents abroad last year.
This represents a 39.3% increase from 11,323 in 2022, and a 142.7% increase (2.4 times) from 6,498 in 2021, when the pandemic was still ongoing.
By type, the most common incidents were loss of property (5,618 cases, 35.6%), followed by theft (2,716 cases, 17.2%), fraud (1,003 cases, 6.4%), suspected disappearances (714 cases, 4.5%), and traffic accidents (649 cases, 4.4%).
There were also numerous cases of violent crime.
Assault and injury accounted for 584 cases (3.7%), robbery for 140 cases (0.9%), rape and sexual assault for 105 cases (0.7%), kidnapping and detention for 98 cases (0.6%), and murder for 22 cases (0.1%).
