<Korean News> LG U+ Successfully Verifies Technology to Solve 6G Dead Zone Problem.

On the 17th, South Korean telecom company LG U+ announced its successful verification of next-generation 6G mobile communication technology, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS), in collaboration with POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) and U.S. precision materials specialist Corning.

RIS technology enables precise reflection, transmission, and control of radio waves without the use of power, providing seamless signal transmission even in areas where radio waves are difficult to reach, such as urban buildings and underground spaces.

The 6G RIS in this project leverages design technology from Professor Hong Won-bin's research team at POSTECH and Corning’s advanced glass technology. It has been optimized to maximize wireless signal transmission efficiency in the upper mid-band frequency range of 7–14 GHz.

Previously, LG U+ had also successfully conducted RIS experiments using 5G frequencies, pre-validating the commercial potential of this technology.

In the 6G era, significantly higher-frequency "ultra-high bands" are expected to be utilized compared to the frequency ranges currently used in mobile communications. These include upper mid-band frequencies, enabling ultra-high-speed data transmission at speeds exceeding several tens of gigabits per second (Gbps).

However, these higher frequencies are more susceptible to obstacles like building walls and windows, making RIS technology, which can adjust signal direction and amplify transmission, an essential component.

To enhance the reliability of its 6G RIS verification, LG U+ conducted tests using Anritsu’s 6G verification solutions at the Korea Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science under the Korea Radio Promotion Association.

The results of this verification will be showcased during Korea Radio Promotion Week, held from November 18 to 21 at COEX in Seoul’s Gangnam District.
