On December 3rd, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced a state of emergency martial law during an urgent address at the presidential office in Yongsan. He declared this measure as necessary to "eradicate pro-North forces and protect the free constitutional order."
President Yoon criticized recent actions by the opposition party, such as the impeachment of the Auditor General and unilateral approval of the national budget, labeling them as "attempts at rebellion" and "clear anti-state behavior."
Through this state of emergency, President Yoon stated, "We will rebuild and safeguard the free Republic of Korea, which is currently on the brink of collapse. To that end, we will root out the anti-state forces that have repeatedly engaged in destructive acts."
He emphasized that "this unavoidable measure is to protect the freedom and safety of the people, defend the sustainability of the state, and ensure a solid nation for future generations against the movements of anti-state forces aiming to overthrow the system."
President Yoon also declared his intention to "swiftly eliminate anti-state forces and restore the nation to normalcy." He assured the public, "Although the declaration of martial law might cause some inconvenience for the good citizens who believe in and adhere to the constitutional values of the Republic of Korea, we will strive to minimize such inconvenience."
He described this action as "inevitable for the survival of the free Republic of Korea" and stressed that the country’s foreign policy principles, including its responsibility and contributions to the international community, remain unchanged.
Concluding his address, President Yoon made a heartfelt plea to the people: "As President, I ask for your trust. I place my faith solely in the people. I will devote my life to defending the free Republic of Korea. Please believe in me."
