<Korean News> What do Koreans do in their spare time?

Today, it was revealed that Koreans are spending their leisure time primarily watching TV or online/mobile videos alone.

On the 27th, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, in collaboration with the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute, announced the results of the 2024 National Leisure Activity Survey, the National Culture and Arts Activity Survey, and the Worker Vacation Survey, which included these findings.

Looking at the most frequently engaged detailed leisure activities (top 1–5, multiple responses), watching TV (62.8%) and watching online/mobile videos (48%) ranked highest.Walking or strolling (45.5%), chatting or making phone calls (30.6%), and shopping or dining out (27%) followed.

When asked about their leisure companions, 54.9% of respondents more than half answered "alone."

Additionally, the average monthly leisure time for the public increased compared to last year, with 3.7 hours on weekdays and 5.7 hours on holidays. However, leisure spending decreased by 14,000 won, with an average monthly expenditure of 187,000 won compared to last year’s 201,000 won.

The Culture Policy Division of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism explained, "This shift can be attributed to the increase in non-face-to-face online leisure activities such as video streaming and the decline in consumption due to rising prices, leading to a higher proportion of rest-oriented activities rather than direct participation in cultural and arts events."
