Seoul Asan Hospital Warns of Health Risks from Excessive High-Calorie Food Consumption Ahead of Lunar New Year

Through its official social media channels, the hospital released a ranking of high-calorie foods to watch out for during the holiday season.
According to the survey, yakgwa—a traditional Korean sweet—topped the list as the highest-calorie food, with 420 kcal per 100 grams. It was followed by tteok-galbi (350 kcal), braised beef ribs (galbi-jjim, 340 kcal), deep-fried skewers (320 kcal), stir-fried glass noodles with vegetables (japchae, 310 kcal), and savory pancakes (jeon, 309 kcal).
Additionally, bulgogi (270 kcal), braised pork ribs (dwaeji-galbi-jjim, 250 kcal), rice cake dumpling soup (tteok-mandu-guk, 210 kcal), and three-color seasoned vegetables (samsek-namul, 142 kcal) ranked seventh to tenth on the list.
The hospital's nutrition team explained, "While holiday dishes are delicious, most of them are high in calories. In particular, dishes like jeon and galbi-jjim contain high amounts of oil and sugar, leading to exceptionally high calorie counts."
The team also offered specific tips for healthier holiday meals. For example, using an air fryer to cook jeon, reducing sugar and adding more vegetables and fruits to galbi-jjim, and cutting back on rice cakes and dumplings in tteok-mandu-guk while adding mushrooms and zucchini.
They further recommended starting meals with namul to enhance satiety, portioning food onto individual plates, and eating slowly to manage intake.
After the holiday, the nutrition team suggested engaging in light exercise to burn off accumulated calories and incorporating a diet of low-sodium and vegetable-based meals to restore physical balance.
