Last year, it was revealed that over 220,000 foreign tourists visited the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), marking the highest record in the museum's history since its opening.
The MMCA announced that a total of 220,607 foreign visitors toured its four locations—Seoul, Gwacheon, Deoksugung, and Cheongju—during 2024.
By nationality, the largest group was from the United States (27%), followed by Europe (26.4%), China (18.8%), Japan (8.5%), and Southeast Asia (7.0%).
Last year's number of foreign visitors represented an increase of 11,669 from the 208,938 visitors recorded in 2023.
Compared to the pre-COVID-19 figure of 162,326 foreign visitors in 2019, this marks a significant increase of 35.9%.
With this, the cumulative number of foreign visitors to the MMCA has surpassed 1 million. Since the opening of the Seoul branch in 2013, the total number of foreign visitors across all four locations has reached 1,012,647.
Notably, nearly 190,000 foreign tourists visited the Seoul branch alone last year. Approximately 50,000 of them attended the exhibition Back to the Future: Exploring Contemporaneity in Korean Modern Art.
Kim Sung-hee, the director of the MMCA, commented, "Amid growing global interest in Korean art, we will continue to prepare unique exhibitions and develop services and programs for both domestic and international visitors as a distinguished national museum."
