<Korean News> Why did K-pop fans demand that idols stop inducing mass album purchases?

An environmental group composed of K-POP fans launched a campaign criticizing entertainment companies like HYBE for marketing strategies that cause environmental pollution.

The environmental group “K-POP for Planet” announced that on the morning of the 4th, they held a campaign performance titled “The Sin of Plastic Albums” in front of HYBE’s headquarters in Yongsan-gu, Seoul.

This campaign performance was designed to highlight the environmental impact of indiscriminate album sales strategies by entertainment companies and to encourage change.

“K-POP for Planet” called for an end to marketing strategies that increase the chances of attending fan sign events based on the number of albums purchased. They also criticized practices such as releasing multiple versions of albums with different covers and encouraging fans to buy albums until they get the desired photo cards.

Additionally, they pointed out that while the industry promotes the use of eco-friendly certified paper and biodegradable materials, CDs are still made from polycarbonate, which is difficult to recycle, and thus, these measures do not provide a fundamental solution.

The sales volume of physical albums in the K-POP industry has been increasing year by year, along with the amount of plastic used for album production.

According to data released by the chief researcher of the Circle Chart, Korea’s official music chart, the total sales volume of the top 400 physical albums on the annual chart last year was 115,778,000 copies. This is an increase from 77,117,000 copies in 2022 and 57,089,000 copies in 2021. The Ministry of Environment also reported that the amount of plastic used by domestic entertainment companies for album production was 801.5 tons in 2022, up from 479.0 tons in 2021 and 225.2 tons in 2020.
