Tonight, one of the three major meteor showers, the Perseid meteor shower, will light up the night sky.
According to the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute and the International Meteor Organization (IMO), the peak time for this year’s Perseid meteor shower is at 11:30 PM on the 12th.
The Perseid meteor shower occurs when dust particles scattered in space by the Swift-Tuttle comet collide with Earth’s atmosphere and burn up, creating a phenomenon where meteors fall like rain. It is named the Perseid meteor shower because it appears to radiate from the direction of the constellation Perseus, and it can be observed annually from mid-July to the end of August.
This year, under ideal conditions, it is expected that up to 100 meteors per hour (ZHR - the predicted number of meteors an observer would see in an hour under perfect conditions with the radiant point at the zenith) can be observed.
