<Korea News> South Korea, a string of electric car fire accidents.

Recently, there have been a series of fires involving parked electric car, raising concerns about fire prevention and battery safety. The main causes of electric car fires are analyzed to be overcharging and battery defects, and related countermeasures are being closely watched.

On August 1st, a fire in the underground parking lot of an apartment in Incheon resulted in the destruction of 72 vehicles. It was found that the car involved in the accident was not being charged at the time, intensifying the controversy. On the 6th, another fire broke out in a parking tower in Geumsan-eup, Geumsan-gun, Chungnam, involving a parked electric car.

According to statistics from the Fire Department on the 7th, the number of electric car fires, which was only three in 2018, increased 24-fold over five years, with nine cases in 2019, 11 in 2020, 24 in 2021, 43 in 2022, and 72 in 2023.

An automotive industry official stated, “Fires involving internal combustion engine car occur more frequently than those involving electric car, but once a fire starts, it is difficult to extinguish and the damage is significant, which seems to leave a strong impression on the general public.” He added, “The impact of these recent fires is expected to continue.”
